West coast report

Western “Old Timers” Luncheon.

(Editor’s Note: The following is a report written by Art Cummings. Art was the MC and set the tone for the event with his
sharp wit and those famous “little known facts” about many of the attendees.)

More than 60 Retirees attended this eagerly awaited  Annual Retiree  Luncheon, on May 12th, held once again
at the Danson Restaurant  in Claremont CA.
Dolores Crimmins, Fran Rudolph, and George Moore, were among those  returning to the Luncheon, promising not to miss it next year. Kenny
Kendall, now in his nineties, and probably the best technician ever to "Tune" balky spectrometers, was warmly greeted  by the attendees.

This group has bonded in a way that one seldom sees  these days.   Many worked through the sale of the Companies who owned.
the business  prior to and after Perkin-Elmer, Hugh Walker gave a  brief history of the progression  of ownership, with wry  observations  that  amused the crowd. To the delight of the attendees, Lola Crosswhite, retired Contracts Manager (who is not in the best of health) returned, after several years absence.    As a surprise, Bliss Bushman, retired Vice President and General Manager, was contacted by phone. He talked at length with Lola, lifting both of their spirits after being out-of-touch for so many years. Hank
Brockschmitt, former  Perkin-Elmer V.P. also enjoyed the “phone reunion”, as different folks shared the phone call. Bliss Bushman was universally loved and respected during his career, and is now living in New Mexico. He jokingly refers to himself as, S.O.B,  (Sweet Ole Bliss).    Sharon Canfield, and Hugh Walker  with the help of  successor company Hamilton Standard's printing and mailing facilities once again organized the event. Thanks again!
Every Perkin-Elmer retiree group seems to have its own special character.
The Western retiree group is no exception, Their bond however is based in large measure on togetherness,
as they all
survived different ownerships TOGETHER! God Bless them all!

9th Southwest Florida Event
Highlighted by Spirited Group

The "Perkin-Elmer Spirit" is alive and well in the Sunshine State!!

That was evident at the 9th Southwest Florida Retiree Club luncheon on March 25 at the Boca Royale Golf & Country Club in Englewood. Forty-five Retiree Club members and spouses gathered in the Fairway Room amid animated conversations, laughter and camaraderie. The moderator set the tone by declaring that there are no housekeeping rules, "keep your cell phones on, take pictures and just have fun within the law," said Don Mahon.

There were several new faces, and missing were a half dozen regulars dealing with medical issues.

Special recognition was given to couples who traveled long distances. Bill and Fay Toth flew in from San Dimas, California, Dave and Barbara Stackpole drove down from Brevard, North Carolina, as did Frank and Ronnie Bulson from Bluffton, South Carolina. Others traveled from all corners of the huge state of Florida. Two former Perkin-Elmer nurses were on hand and took a bow. Evelyn Prusak served employees at 50 and 77 Danbury Road and Pat McWhirt was the nurse at Wooster Heights.

When Frank Bulson was introduced, he let loose with one of his infamous shrieks from his 22 years as "Junior," the upstart little kid, in the Joey Zelle Children's Christmas Shows. Today, "Stumpy," as he is known, is a member of his community's chorus that had the honor of performing recently at the Vatican.

The late Ray Hellman was remembered as never missing the luncheons. He passed away 12 days before the event and was missed.

Raffle winners of bottles of wine and sleeves of golf balls were Lorie Kerber, Art Morello, Joe Malandrakis, "Stumpy" Bulson, Jane Sebestyen and Peggy Heffernan.

Luncheon arrangements were coordinated by Ginni and Don Mahon.

At the conclusion of the luncheon, a poll was taken and interest is high to hold a special 10th reunion next year aboard a luxury yacht. Arrangements will be made to hold the event aboard the "Harbor Lady" for a relaxing, 3-hour scenic cruise of Charlotte Harbor. The "Harbor Lady" departs from Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda. More details will appear in future issues.

                                                                            - Don Mahon
